Minimalism

The two works I picked are Opening by Philip Glass and In C by Terry Riley. I enjoy Opening by Glass much more then I enjoy In C by Terry Riley.

Terry Riley's piece is very edgy. All the instruments in his work clash together and all seem to be playing different notes at different times and there is so much going on that you can't enjoy the sound that just one of the instruments make because they seem to all run together.

The work my Philip Glass is much more soothing. I can sit back in my chair and relax when I hear this. It has so less edge to it and it flows very smoothly. Also in this piece, it is a solo piano which also takes out the idea of all the instruments running into each other because there is only one.

Overall, Philip Glass has more of a soothing and peaceful art to his piece and Riley has a very kind of edge, and clash of notes and instruments in his, but both show the minimalist style through gradual slow change and just doing the same thing over and over again with slight tweaks to the melody.

Tromba Lontana by John Adams

Tromba Lontana is a piece written by composer John Adams in 1986. The piece was composed for the Houston Symphony in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Texas' declaration of independence from Mexico. It contains the voices of two trumpets that are separated from the orchestra.
